2017 Minimum Wage Rate Changes

Minimum wage rates are changing in many states across the country starting December 31, 2016 or January 1, 2017.  Below are the highlights and a full list is available.

The Massachusetts minimum wage rate will be $11.00 as of January 1 2017.

Minimum wage for tipped employees will be $3.75 starting Jan. 1, 2017.

Massachusetts Blue Laws require some employers to pay premium pay for Sundays and certain holidays.

New England States:

  • Maine:   $9.00 ($5.00 for tipped employees) on Jan. 1, 2017

  • Vermont:  $10.00 ($5.00 for certain service or tipped employees) on Jan. 1, 2017

  • New Hampshire:  No current minimum wage updates

  • Massachusetts:  $11.00 on Jan. 1 2017.

  • Rhode Island:   $3.89 for tipped employees on Jan. 1, 2017.  Minimum wage for non-tipped employees remains $9.60.

  • Connecticut:  $10.10 on Jan. 1, 2017

North Atlantic States:

  • New York:  $9.70 ($11.00 for NYC employers with 11 or more employees; $10.50 for NYC employers with 10 or fewer employees; $10.00 for Long Island & Westchester; $12.00 for fast food employees within NYC; $10.75 for fast food employees outside of NYC) on Dec. 31, 2016

  • New Jersey:   $8.44 on Jan. 1, 2017

  • Pennsylvania:  No current minimum wage updates

  • Delaware:  No current minimum wage updates

  • Maryland:  $9.25 on July 1, 2017

  • Virginia:  No current minimum wage updates

  • Washington DC: $12.50 ($3.33 for tipped employees) on July 1, 2017
